How to Make a Charm Bracelet with Enamel Pendants: A Beginner's Guide

How to Make a Charm Bracelet with Enamel Pendants: A Beginner's Guide

There's something deeply satisfying about making your own jewelry. Not just because it saves money (though it does), but because the result is something that's entirely, unmistakably yours. A charm bracelet you made yourself carries a different kind of meaning than one you bought off a shelf — every charm is a choice, every placement is intentional, and every time you wear it, you remember making it.

The good news? You don't need to be a professional jeweler to make a beautiful charm bracelet. With the right charms and a few basic tools, you can create something stunning in under an hour. Here's everything you need to know.

What You'll Need

  • Charm pendants — we recommend starting with 3–5 charms in a theme or colour palette you love. Try our Tulip Enamel Charm, Moon & Stars Ceramic Charm, or Bird Botanical Enamel Charm for a nature-inspired set.
  • A bracelet chain or cord — a simple gold cable chain (16–18cm) works beautifully with gold-plated charms. Alternatively, use a waxed cotton cord or leather cord for a more bohemian feel.
  • A lobster clasp and jump rings — if your chain doesn't already have a clasp, you'll need these to finish the bracelet.
  • Two pairs of flat-nose pliers — these are your most important tool. They let you open and close jump rings cleanly without distorting the metal.
  • Optional: wire cutters — useful if you need to trim your chain to length.

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Before you attach anything, lay your charms out on a flat surface and experiment with the order. Think about balance — alternating larger and smaller charms, mixing enamel colours with gold tones, or grouping charms by theme. There's no right answer, but taking a few minutes to plan saves a lot of re-doing later.

Pro tip: Take a photo of your favourite layout before you start attaching, so you have a reference as you work.

Step 2: Prepare Your Chain

If you're using a pre-made bracelet chain with a clasp, you're ready to go. If you're working with raw chain, cut it to your desired length (measure around your wrist and add 1–2cm for comfort), then attach a lobster clasp to one end and a jump ring to the other using your pliers.

Step 3: Attach Your Charms

This is the most satisfying part. For each charm:

  1. Hold the jump ring on your charm with one pair of pliers.
  2. Use the second pair of pliers to grip the other side of the jump ring.
  3. Twist one side of the ring towards you and the other away from you to open it (never pull the ring apart sideways — this distorts the shape).
  4. Slide the open jump ring through a link in your bracelet chain at your chosen position.
  5. Twist the ring back to its closed position, making sure the ends meet cleanly.
  6. Repeat for each charm.

Pro tip: Space your charms evenly along the chain, or cluster them towards the centre for a more intentional, curated look.

Step 4: Check and Adjust

Once all your charms are attached, put the bracelet on and see how it sits. Do the charms hang the way you imagined? Is the weight balanced? This is the moment to make any final adjustments — moving a charm one link to the left, swapping two charms around, or adding one more piece if it feels like something's missing.

Step 5: Wear It

That's it. You made a charm bracelet. Put it on, take a photo, and wear it everywhere.

Ideas for Charm Combinations

Not sure where to start? Here are a few of our favourite charm bracelet themes using pieces from the Mosswick collection:

  • Spring Garden: Tulip Enamel Charm + Orange Tulip Enamel Charm + Bird Botanical Enamel Charm
  • Celestial Night: Moon & Stars Ceramic Charm + Gold Fishbone Charm + Sunburst Ceramic Bead
  • Foodie Fun: Gold Spatula Charm + Gold Whiskey Bottle Charm + any enamel charm
  • Mix & Match: One of everything — because rules are for people who haven't discovered charm bracelets yet

Can I Use These Charms for Other Projects?

Absolutely. Every Mosswick charm pendant comes with an open jump ring, which means you can attach them to:

  • Necklace chains (as a single pendant or layered with others)
  • Hair pins (clip the jump ring through the top of a bobby pin)
  • Earring hooks (for a mismatched, eclectic earring look)
  • Bag straps or zipper pulls
  • Keychains

The charm is the starting point. Where you take it is entirely up to you.
